GETTING HERE
“BEAR’s
DEN” CABIN
From Asheville -- go east on I-40
towards Statesville. As you descend after passing the village of Ridgecrest
(home to Billy Graham), watch for the first exit for town of Old Fort.
Take this exit and it puts you on NC70 going through Old Fort (one
stoplight), continue on about 9 miles to a light at intersection with
NC80. (There’s a great little Italian
Restaurant on the corner, “Mama Irena’s Little Sienna”). Go left, follow NC80 up into the mountains, about
15 miles you’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway, keep going another couple
miles and you’ll see the Mt Mitchell Golf course on your left. Keep going another couple miles, you’ll pass Clear Creek Road, Carolina
Hemlocks Recreation area, and watch for a BP station on the right. The house is just past the BP station on the
right. You’ll see my vacation rental
sign in the yard.
From Burnsville
– go east on 19E about 3 miles exit onto Micaville Loop (you’ll see signs for
Mt Mitchell State Park and NC80 South).
About ¼ mile turn right onto NC80 South. Go about 10 miles or so. You’ll pass Locust Creek Rd on your right, then Hatcreek Trail on the left, then Locust Creek Rd on the right. Watch on the left side of the road, the cabin is on the
left with my vacation rental sign in the yard.
If you drive past it you’ll see a BP station on the left.
From Raleigh/Charlotte area – take I-40 toward Asheville. Exit at NC226 (Love’s Truck Stop), and go
toward Marion. NC226 will join NC221 and form a bypass
around Marion. Do not take Business 70 into Marion.
About 5 miles after NC226 and NC221 join,
you’ll come down a steep hill to a light at the intersection with NC70. At that intersection is a Wal
Mart. Turn left, past the fast foods,
Food Lion, Fatz Café, and Lowe’s Lumber,
continue on about 2 miles, past Tom Johnson’s Camping Center. Turn right at the light at the intersection
with NC80. (There’s a great little
Italian Restaurant on the corner, “Mama Irena’s Little Sienna”). Go right, follow NC80 up into the mountains, about
15 miles you’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway, keep going another couple
miles and you’ll see the Mt Mitchell Golf course on your left. Keep going another couple miles, you’ll pass Clear Creek Road, Carolina
Hemlocks Recreation area, and watch for a BP station on the right. The house is just past the BP station on the
right. You’ll see my vacation rental
sign in the yard.
